Business Websites in Ghana
Many small and medium-sized enterprise owners in Ghana are not taking full advantage of the huge opportunity a well thought out, and co-ordinated internet presence represents. A business website combined with effective SEO and social media campaigns is an investment that is well worth making.
A website is a business' online store. It is the first interaction that many potential customers are going to have with your business. It is an opportunity to create that perfect first impression. A poor website, or even worse, no website at all can spoil a business' credibility in the eyes of its customers.
Where would you prefer to eat?
I'd prefer to eat at the restaurant on the left, as I am sure most of us would. That is the conclusion I have reached based only on the appearance of the two restaurants. A judgement made without knowing anything about the quality of the food or standard of service. As humans, we see a piece of evidence (a plain, unimaginative restaurant exterior) and make assumptions about the business as a whole based on that one signal.
It is the same with websites. If your business does not have a website, or it is unattractive to look at, potential customers will be put off doing business with your company. In fact, visitors to websites form an opinion in just 50 milliseconds. That's 0.05 seconds for a visitor to decide whether to stay or leave!
Importantly, websites are also a very effective and relatively inexpensive (especially a site that has good SEO) tool for marketing a company and its products and services. They can reach consumers anywhere there is internet access, and they are far cheaper and more informative than most other forms of advertising.
'A-ha! You're a web developer; you would say that wouldn't you', I expect some of you are thinking. Well yes, I would, because it's true and here are just a few statistics to back it up:
Various studies report that as many as 80 per cents of consumers perform online research before visiting a company or purchasing goods and services from them.
91 per cent of consumers have gone to a particular retail outlet because of an online experience. [Source Espresso Digital]
According to Google data from 2016, 68 per cent of consumers who conducted local searches on their smartphone visited the stores within 24 hours, and almost 50 per cent purchased goods within a day. [Source Espresso Digital]
Although this is US-based data, as Ghana becomes more and more digitally connected with many more active internet users, the same trends can be applied here.
I Don't Need A Website
One common objection to having a website that business owners make is, "My business is too small to have a website." But have they ever considered that one of the reasons their business remains small is because they have no website?
A well-designed website adds credibility to a business and attracts new customers.
Another objection is, "We are not an e-commerce business." That is a weak reason for not having a website. The vast majority of business sites are for businesses that are not e-commerce businesses. Your website is there so that new customers can find you and have access to information about your business.
Not having a website for your Ghanaian business in 2018 when so many consumers (over one-third) are active internet users is a grave error.
How much will my business website cost?
The cost of a having a business website can vary dramatically. They can be free (although this option comes with its issues), and they can cost anywhere from 600 Ghana Cedis to more than 100,000 Ghana Cedis.
There are many options, and the cost shouldn't put you off.
As with any business related decisions, a budget should be set that is sensible for the business and worked within. The budget can always be refined as new information becomes available.
However, when setting the budget, understand what it is you are investing in. A website is not a frivolity. It is a powerful marketing tool, and it is a way of reaching new customers and communicating with existing ones. It is a worthwhile investment that needs to be taken seriously with a plan for implementation and goals for what results are expected.
Avoid the temptation to go for the 'cheap' option. Everything has a cost, and the cheap option is often a false economy with results that cost your business with the results achieved and your business' credibility.
Poor SEO will dramatically reduce the site's effectiveness in finding new customers.
An unattractive website puts off customers.
Badly written copy can alienate visitors and damage credibility.
Set a sensible, yet generous budget that reflects the value of having well thought out and implemented online 'real estate'. Find a website development company that can do the work to a good standard and work closely with them to get the result that you want for your business.
Investing in a strong online presence for your business can have amazing upsides and produce results that are out of this world! It can help you win new clients and customers. It is also a powerful marketing tool that offers excellent value for money and a far reach. A business website allows you to be imaginative, and market your company in new ways.
Consider the example of amazon.com.
Amazon.com was an online retail business for books that began its life in Jeff Bezos' car garage. The funding came from his (and his parent's) savings.
There was never any physical shop location. Only a website.
Ask Jeff if it was worth investing properly and with care in a website. He is now the richest man in the world and amazon.com is the largest retailer in the world.
